One of my neighbors set off a batch of fireworks late (1AM) last night, and my dog was out. He is just not friendly with the loud bang sounds (which is why I never pushed him into hunting).
Anyway, the dog is gone. Years of strong yard-training mean nothing to a scared dog.
My kids think he is dead.
I just hope the Humane Society will find him and read his chip. We're going up later anyway.

He shouldn't be dead, it's common for animals running nuts with fireworks going off. He should return after he gets his senses back.

Whew...
Someone found him, dropped him off at the Humane Society night-drop boxes at around 4:30 AM.
Got him back, thank God, but it cost us a pretty penny.

No doubt. Glad you got himm back.
Did you yell at the neighbor for setting off those fireworks so late? Perhaps you should present the Humane Society's bill to them for making such a big racket at 1AM.

You should have called the cops on your ignorant neighbor. Setting off fireworks at 1:00 AM should not be tolerated no matter what day it is.

Unfortunately, I don't know which neighbor it was. It wasn't at a house adjacent to mine. My wife just heard it and saw the lights through the window of our bedroom, which faces the back of the house. The fireworks were aerial.

I wasn't home I'd gone out for a bit to collect a friend who was too wasted to drive (I play DD on-call), otherwise I'd have put in a call to a friend of mine who was on duty that night.
Omaha is a no-fireworks zone, and the fines are hefty, but I won't call someone in unless they are using them irresponsibly, e.g. bottlerocket or roman candle wars, nuking yards, or shooting them off when my poor wife and kids are trying to sleep... :mad We left town and visited friends in Wahoo partially just so the kids could play with sparklers.

Around here, it's shoot them anytime of day, so long as it's done two weeks either side of a holiday. Yet one more reason to move.

Tell me about it.
Fireworks suppose to be going off the offical time of after 6pm to around up to 11pm, but noo, you got some ***** parents who don't watch their kids that are lighting up fireworks days BEFORE 4th of july.

Almost lost the dog today while I was at work. He's suddenly decided that the yard boundaries I etched into his thick skull suddenly don't mean anything now. He jumped the fence and just took off... thankfully Glenn was right behind him, and the poor guy managed to drag a dog that weighs 25lbs more than he does back to the house.
Cadence was trained very thoroughly to not jump the fence (he still did when I came home from work, but only to see me, not to run away), and in the unfenced front yard, he would not pass the curb, or walk into the neighbors' yards without a family member with him.
Suddenly, since the 4th, this programming is gone, and he's off to explore the world.
My next couple days off will probably be very interesting. For him.

As it's usually difficult to train out engranied habits in dogs, I would imagine it won't take long for you to remind him of his engrained habits of obedience.

He saw what was out there on its own, now he wants more.
