Moved to the new house and finally have the whole Internet thing all figured out.
When I say new - I mean it literally. Brand new development, brand new house. DOWNSIDE is that there is no standard copper for telephone in this development. There is FIOS from Verizon and Cable from Comcast. So, I couldn't just carry over my Verizon DSL service and regular phone like I wanted.
FIOS is way, way invasive. They wanted to drill through the garage wall, put in a battery backup, the whole deal. I was like NO FREAKIN WAY! Besides, Verizon was RUDE!
So, I tried CLEAR WIRE, which is in theory a GREAT solution, but in my area, coverage was almost non-existent. I got only 1 out of 5 in signal quality most of the time, and it dropped off all the time, which is just not good when you do VPN, so, I sent the modem back within the 7 day trial period.
Only option left was Comcast. The house has 5 total cable jacks, 4 upstairs and 1 downstairs. Two were already "hot" and active, free for 14 days. So, I saved install and just had 'em come out and activate all 5 jacks and bring a self-install kit. The junction box was already located inside in a panel in one of the bedroom closets, so all they did was add the 3 connectors to the end of the wires in the box, did the splitter thing and bam, all 5 jacks active. Plugged the modem into the wired router and bam, it was up and going as soon as I filled out the account info.
So, I get about 6 mbps down and 1.5 up, which is twice the speed of my 3 m / 768k DSL. So, since cable bandwidth is shared, even if I lose half of the speed, I am still not losing anything over my old and wonderful DSL setup, which was dedicated per unit.
Anyway, I'm on the 2nd day of it and it really seems to perform well. I'll email out to some folks to notify them of a change of addy and can cancel out the Verizon at the old condo.
It's good to be back online. I was kinda getting information withdrawal and all that. :)
Glad to see these forums kickin' tail and takin' names. Diggin' the updated icons too, for the most part.
Got me some catchin' up to do. Just wanted to say hello and explain the lack of availability.
Happy Surfin' :)
