View Full Version : Kmart Dumps Blu-ray Due to Price

Having both, this is kinda bad news for me. I personally think BD has always been overpriced, and it will eventually show.
Now that HD DVD has the HUGE jump on the under 100.00 player (for the average joe).
Granted, the war won't be finalized surely for at least another 2 years.
But I am one, that must have ALL the HD material I can get.
So for now, I am happy to say, I will be picking up Cars in BD format.:Thumb

Holy crap! Last I saw Wal-mart was selling it for almost $200! Nice!
I wonder if it's available here in PR too...
It is, but the price may be a tad higher in PR.
(you can see that in the ad)
EDIT::
If you have other stores that price match, I would give it a try (if they are sold out at your local Wal-mart)
(make sure to print out the ad, although it was such a big thing it was even on this mornings news)
I know the HD-A3 will be on sale for 169.00, on Black Friday.

I already have the Xbox HD-DVD add-on...
I know the A2 doesn't do 1080p, just up to 1080i, but I read the difference is not noticeable if say my receiver upscales it to 1080p.
On the other hand it does decode True Dolby HD which my receiver and the Xbox Add-on do not.
BCR, if you were me, would you get the A2 and sell the Xbox Add-on?
PS. Black Friday... Wal-mart? No thanks, I want to live to see my 30s.

Just more prof to me that Sony's Blue Ray will bust in the open markets. Wal-mart is going to have a sale soon for 99$ HD-DVD's and that's a price that motivates people to buy. And I shop at Wal-mart alot more than those other stores.
Re: Maku;
It would be much more convienant than the Xbox add-on.
Although it does decode, you would still need a AVR that has HDMI in. (or will be purchasing in the future)
See what I said, basically on the same question here - http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=325437&postcount=39
EDIT: To answer you direct, I don't know your finances.
But I would certainly have no problem getting another one.

Yeah, I know. I have a Denon 2307CI. So I was thinking HDMI Multichannel output through LPCM.
I could easily afford a ~$100 HD DVD Player right now, especially since I can sell the Xbox Add-on.
You know what, I'm gonna get it (IF they have it here which I think they won't) and just compare. Whichever I like less I sell. :Wink
So I'll see you guys in a couple of hours. :KICKASS

Bah, offer is not available in PR. They don't even have the A2 in stock yet.
Sucks... :grumble

Huh... If they can make a $100 blu-ray player, how come sony is losing buckets of cash from their PS3?
how come sony is losing buckets of cash from their PS3?
That is their writeoff losses.
Example, a Doctor charges insurance company 120.00 a visit, (which he is already overcharging as is)
Normal visit for a person without insurance is 50.00
Insurance pays 60.00 of that 120.00, you pay copayment of 15.00
So 45.00 is written as loss (per patient)
In other words, no they are not losing money.
They are overcharging to begin with, what they claim as the cost per unit (399.00).
Example.
PS3 costs 45.00 per unit to make (probably not even that much, more like 35.00)
Shipping costs are in bulk, so say 20,000 units for 4,500.00 shipping ($4.44 per unit)
The loss is not in the unit, but in their overmarketing costs, TV ads, cost to stores for front displays, etc..

Didn't they see that dropping the price increased sales? Why not drop more to make it affordable.. I'm not understanding why all these large companies don't understand that make a lot and make it cheap works VERY well.

Well I just bought the Toshiba A2 online at CircuitCity. For $157 shipped is not as hot a deal, but not that bad either for my options. Plus I can still break even by selling my Xbox HD DVD add-on. Heck, I could even make a bit money if I'm able to sell it over here since electronics (and pretty much everything else) is more expensive here.
According to CC the ETA is Nov 19. :jawsdown
Slow shipping, but oh well, at least it wasn't expensive considering the item and the destination.
Didn't they see that dropping the price increased sales?
Poor marketing for an overpriced item (equals=greedy)

For PR, I would think that is a great price shipped to your door.
Heck, even after tax here, it would have been 106.00 and each store only had about 10 players.
They were gone at my local store , in the first 15 minutes.
(so called 3 other within 10 mile radius, all sold out within the first half hour)
Hey, look at this way, 157.00 and 125.00 in free HD DVDs. (going by Best Buy nad Circuit City's normal price per movie of 24.95)

That is IF the 5 free HD DVDs offer is available for PR (doesn't clarify in the flier), which I also doubt it. :Sigh
Will try it anyway, see what happens.
Just to be on the safe side, do you know someone in the states, that you could have it sent to?
It does clarify NO P.O. boxes.
and just says, void where prohibited. (I am looking up the exact details now)
No details at the site.....:(
Check AVS forums, ask the fellows there in Hawaii, Alaska, PR, etc.. if they received theirs.
Do you have a membership there?
If not, I will post the question for you.

Yeah, I'm a member of AVS forums. name: MakubeX
Don't post much over there but I do read a lot when I need advice on HT stuff.
And no, I don't know anyone in CONUSA I can have it sent to. :(
Edit: Ok, I PMed a guy who appears to live in PR. Hopefully he already tried out the 5 free DVD offer.
Thanks for your help, Brian.
