View Full Version : Work out time... going to lose weight over the Holidays!

I've already been on a light cardio program and a diet for the last several months, along with general kendo workouts, but unfortunately I've only gotten only a 5 pound weight loss, though I've seen a major difference in waist size and arm and leg definition. But I can't quit and call it good... I'm still 261lbs (118.5Kg), and I want to make a take at my football level (from 15 years ago!) at 220lbs, and get the strength back, too!
And I can't afford to join a gym again!
So, through people I chat with, I was directed to Men's Workout Guide (http://mensworkoutguide.com), which is essentially a great workout system that can be done at home with a minimum of equipment, and what's great is that this site is free! I went to Walmart and grabbed everything I needed (except the pull-up bar) for less than $100US.

The above is one of the challenge (e.g. You've made it, so try this!!!) videos on the site. I'm still going through week 1, the easy week, and I am beat. No six-pack yet, but...
Join up and give me support! :Yea right
Oh, yeah, there is a paid-for program as well, for people who get addicted, but it's on an additional website you'll find in the links.

Er... yeah, I've used those before... and they suck. They are great for a few exercises, but you lose the balancing muscles that free-weights hit. They are unfortunately like a mini-weight-machine.
I bought a set of high-strength elastic workout bands ($15), a set of screw-on type dumbbells ($30), a 65cm fitness ball ($10), and a Marci adjustable bench ($40).
I say, give me the stuff that has been working for, well, hundreds of years. High-tech isn't needed for muscles!
just to add to that to remeber that musel is heavyer than fat
I said as much above, except I didn't actually say it.
Oh, by the way, get a spell-checker!

i find the bull worker realy good the hardest part is sticking to it. i try an hour a day and its helped me a lot. i would say 3 things bull worker, pull up bar and some weights.

I can't say I'm hugely impressed with wieght training. I've been there and done that, got fairly fit and very toned although my metabolism was too high at that point to gain any real muscle. The real trouble with weight training is that it's a largely solitary exercise and as a result requires a lot of dedication. A bigger problem is that it doesn't get you hugely fit.
My recommendatoin is that you take up some sort of sport. It won't get you ripped like the exercises will in the videos but most will improve your generall fitness and wellbeing. As a practical example, I was talking to some team mates (ultimate frisbee) who had been going to the gym over the summer and felt as though they had become really fit. A couple of hours of frisbee training disolved that illusion, especially as they weren't coping very much better than I was and I hadn't done very much exercise over the summer at all (largely thanks to the poor weather). Also, playing a team sport has a social element to it which means that you are more likely to come back week after week rather than give something a good go for a few months and then give up and get back to where you started.
As for the lack of weight loss, I wouldn't worry about it. You've gained better muscle tone and I assume you've been getting fitter as well. At the end of the day if you're fit and healthy then losing a few pounds doesn't really mean jack.
Anyway, that's my two pennies and best of luck with the new workouts!

I highly doubt that the guy in the video got that fit from february to june.
If you really want to get muscle definiton, and not just tone, your diet obviously plays a huge role. So eat a lot of carbs/protein!! :thumb :Beer

Well the best diet for me was the atkins diet, remember them? I lost an amazing 30lbs in 5 to 6 weeks because i do believe that the "bad" carbs keep the fat in your system like sugar and many pasta... anyway all i ate was fat and meat with some vegetables that didn't have "bad" carbs... i felt alot of energy and fit! I agree that playing in a team sports will help you alot as well. I was a wrestler for 6 years and that will help you lose alot! lol Some people say that wrestling is 4x as hard than football. Its true because its all on you and you go full out for max 9 min! which is a killer if you're not in good enough shape.. anyway give atkins a try...works for me i'm at 220 lbs now at 6'1" and i never did any weight-training. just cardio and wrestling

My recommendatoin is that you take up some sort of sport.
I already am involved in a "sport", kenjutsu (e.g. kendo with real weapons). I happily wave a 3.5lb sword over my head on a regular basis, with tons of footwork.
I'm not fat, per se, I'm still muscular, but with a bit of a belly and a second chin... but I'm remembering the days when I had a moderate six-pack and could push a lineman around like nothing.
I'm thinking more on 1) lowering body fat is better overall considering my artificial heart valve and the medications involved there-in, and 2) I imagine that my wife would like it if I was a lean muscular hunk... :kiss

And I can't afford to join a gym again!
Best tips:
Drink lots of spring water. Tap water is very bad to drink and even too shower in these days with so much fluoride and chlorine. Taking a bath in our tap water is like drinking 3 cups of that nasty stuff. You can get a shower filter for 20$ at Lowes. This also helps people with dry skin problems.
Eat 6 small meals a day even if you are not hungry.
Try to eat a large breakfast.
Avoid soda and any kind of artificial sweeteners. Man-made sweets are horrible on the body. Leeds to Depression and Anxiety, not to mention they are put in there to get you addicted.
Eat as much Organic foods as you can afford. Publix is pretty good about selling Organics. I know it costs a little more than the normal stuff that is loaded with so many man made chemical's. Anything that is not Organic is pretty much designed to leave you feeling hungry to eat more. They pack everything these days with Trans Fats. They Irradiate our vegetables and gas them to kill the enzymes. Sure they look fresh and good, but odds are they don't digest very well. They pretty much turn a nice apple into a poisons fruit. Eat 2 Organic apples each day.
Eat lots of Hot Peppers.
Use Cinnamon.
If you need something sweet, use Organic Sugar, Honey, Nector or Stevia.
Get 8 hours of Sleep!!! This is most important.
Get 20 Minutes of Sun!
Get 20 Minutes of Sweat, such as a Sauna.
Probably not a bad idea to cleanse out your colon with a flush. The Colon builds up alot of toxins over the years and this slows down your metabolism. Man is not better than nature unless it's to make money, so do what you can to remove any extra poisons from entering your body. I know alot of people that come to the states and eat the same foods, but gain lots of weight while they are here. I think it's sad that our food standards are so out of whack that we actually buy the stuff they are selling us. 60% of Americans are over weight and we a very active! Geese.. why is that you think? Could it be the hormones, additives, no enzyme foods, lack of nutrients, but lasts forever with 15,000 drugs that get put into everything we eat and drink? Look at the label on some of these Organic foods and your jaw will drop at the lack of things listed and how tiny the charted numbers can be. I say it's better to spend more on the quality Organic foods than to pay extra in Meds down the road and extra time working out. I'm just now waking up to that fact these last few years.
I'm out of shape now, but want to get the ball moving again soon. Those blood pressure meds had me all out of whack this year. I feel less foggy, but now I'm worried that I might be gaining extra weight. Could just be a winter thing and a lack of outside time.. but I'm trying.
Back in my younger days we didn't have city water. The food was grown locally and the milk was from grass feed cows. We where skinny as can be back then. Today however I find myself always hungry, snacking all the time. But was eating the wrong processed foods. After cleaning out my Colon and eating the Organics I feel much better.
Anyway, to really lose that body fat and to see the muscles you needs to watch your blood sugar levels. Don't load up on Carbs unless you are feeling drained from working out too long. Eat lots of lean meats. I like eggs in the morning, feels me up good.
Most supplements are just a waste of money. Nothing you can't do just from eating Organic foods. Trust me, get the Organic foods and after a while the weight will fall off easy.
I find that losing weight to look tone has very little to do with lifting any weights. It's more about repetitions. You need to do something that does not take the wind out of you. You need Oxygen to burn fat. A slow but steady manual job, hour long walks, doing the yard work ect.. These things get you heated, sweating, circulating the blood sugars and fats. I could work out in my prime for 3 to 5 hours 5-days a week. I got lots of muscles and was called mini Arnold for years, but it was the controlling of my sugar intake and the long slow repetitive things that really boosted the metabolic rates and got the results.

Eat lots of Hot Peppers.
Mmmm... Chilli...
Apparently good, hot fresh chillis can boost your metabolism by 25% and also contain a number of lovely vitamins. My grandparents' friends were PoWs in Japan during WWII and they put their survival down to the fresh chillis growing on bushes over there.

Genetics play a large role in how..ehmm fat you are...
I'm very skinny for my height (6'1"), but then again I'm only 14!...
And losing weight is very hard I;ve heard. If you want to become like a bodybuilder for instance, diet is a HUGE part of having a lean body as mentioned by Tivon.

I was nearly 180 lbs 6 months ago. I lost 25 lbs just by reducing portion size. If you are going to try to loose weight do so at a gradual pace. I lost 1 lb per week. Loosing it the easy part keeping it off is the hard part.

I know the feeling man. I'd drop 15 pounds and then get it all back. That's just it for many people. Whatever it is that you do to lose the weight must be done till the day you die or it will come back. I like to think of it all as a life style and not a diet. 6 meals a day is really not very hard to do. Take 3 meals and split them each in half. Make sure you eat something at least once every 3 1/2 hours. Beyond that point your body gets hungry and puts you into a fat storing mode. When you eat large meals your body can only process so much and the rest is stored energy. Of course dieting alone is not enough, you need exercise as well. It's a chore at times but it's the price we pay siting at the computer for long hours. Sooner or later chugging down soda and candy at those lan parties is going to kill you.

Well, my luck held out... :lmao
I was "overlifting" (per company regulations) last night, got tripped by a warehouse stager (not his fault, though he was in my "personal space") and sprained my wrist.
So... weight lifting is going to wait a couple weeks before I get moving on it again. Glad I've got a Gazelle and can still do crunches.
Moving on...

Could be worse.. I've pulled a few muscles in my days in the gym. A muscle snapped in my chest once, while benching over 315 pounds, scared the hell out of me. I was fine and kept working out on it that week till I forgot all about it. Lesson is to warm-up and not push it too hard. What you need are weight lifting gloves and a belt. They help to keep your back from hurting and your wrist from flexing out of place.

No, no, this happened to me at work! I was carrying envelope boxes. "Overlifting" refers to company policy that employees are only supposed to carry one box (containing roughly 2000 envelopes) at a time... I usually carry 4 or 5.
I do use gloves when lifting! I know how to protect myself when working out! Just not apparently at work... :spin

Wow, I missed that... Geez, right now benching 175 once is massively scary (and only works after I've freaked myself into adrenaline), and at my peak (yes, I'm getting old) 15 years ago I only topped out at 250 for repeated sets.

That was in my prime at 26, Errm.. I'm 34 now and that amount of weight would be too much for me now. Hmm.. That makes me think if I should try again one day here and see what I'm at now after all these years. That was my Free-Weight lift, little higher on the devices. I've worked out with people that start were I finish.. but they are much bigger guys. I'm actually normal height and struggling to lose weight. Much of my younger years was spent in the gym because there was nothing else to do. Got tired of bosses using me as the work horse. So I switch to computers and sat in chairs and now I'm trying to get some of my old life style back.
Wow, I missed that... Geez, right now benching 175 once is massively scary (and only works after I've freaked myself into adrenaline), and at my peak (yes, I'm getting old) 15 years ago I only topped out at 250 for repeated sets.

That's probably more than I could do at 15, but by 16 I was in the gym and building muscle. It takes about one year to get into good shape, but it takes at least 3 years to finally reach what I call "The Peak." You don't gain much more after that point unless you raise the hours in the gym, sleep longer and eat more.
His avatar is very misleading.

Probably can't anymore. I could try and might get it once, but my muscles would be out of energy fast or hurt myself now. Heck 2 45's and the bar sounds heavy to me now. I could get it all back in one year if I worked at it.
Mine is in a very bad spot here in this thread.... I never thought Tivon was like that either. I thought he looks like the average gamer :smokin
I had a member ship to the YMCA. It was just down the street from me and for 50$ per year till 19 was a good deal. My best friend would workout with me all school year. Geeze.. he pushed me hard for a long time. But then again we both did because I thought he had chicken legs..lol. Dam legs feel good and hurt, hate it but love it.
Note to self: stay on Tivon's good side. :hail
Just because someone is stronger does not mean jack to what they can do. Plenty of weaker people teach me lessons all the time using that force to my disadvantage. I always wanted to train in martial arts, but never had the money for classes. People used to think I would be good at sports, but I'm not because I never play. Not big enough for football but could drag someone down the road a few miles one handed.
The last time I went to a gym was about 7 months ago. Friend at work had the keys to his DoJo. Anyway, after working out they wanted me to test my free weight bench, but it was not very much if I remember right. Something in the 200's. Of course that was after burning out on Bar dips at my heavy weight. The guy was shocked because he could not do those and freaked when he noticed my forearms flexing. I'm out of shape now, so most people would never think I'm as strong as I am or could be. That's just it though, you need to workout to get pumped to show those muscles. On any normal day you would look the average person if you didn't workout.
You guys should didn't see my buff kid photo? :)

Yeah, that's the number 1 problem; keep working! Lol sorry to burst your bubble I did 410lbs bench when I was a senior in High school, because I was wrestling so that helps a lot. I hit the gym about 3 to 5 hours every weekday then sometimes more on weekends if I'm not busy. I didn't use any pills or powder to "help" build muscles, I just don't believe in them. Its important that you rotate your muscles group because that's how muscles grow. By doing lifting or anything your muscles break down or tears apart then when rest it rebuilds with stronger and/or faster memory muscles. So that's a must for lifting weights.. do 1 muscles group per day like arms, then back, then abs, then legs and start over. Gave me the best result and I never try to do max sets only max reps as much as I can. I forgot what's it called when you start low with many weights then go up the weight but lower the reps and keep going as far as you can. Anyway, you can call me a jock/nerd in high school but now i guess you can call me a husband because i don't play sports anymore and didn't keep up with the tech for a long time but i'm learning again.

They call that a Pyramid set.
There are so many different ways to lift these days. You have German Volume Training, 5x5, HST and the list goes on. I recommend MAX OT for beginners and Spytech Strength and Hypertrophy training for people who are more advanced but don't know how to make there own programs. If you want a challenging leg routine just ask...

Yeah, there are bigger guys than myself, like I said "I'm normal size." The real scary dudes I found at GoldsGym. Geeze, it must be nice to be over 6 ~ 7 feet tall and built like a tank. I didn't get alot of sleep as a kid, probably my downfall in muscles building. Didn't have the money for those shakes and junk, let alone food. My last years in the Gym I was gaining so much I would stop in the middle of working out and hit the bikes for the remaining time that I was working out with friends. I'd hop off and show them a few moves and go back to the bikes. I had it all down with positive and negative kinetics and multiple angles. Loved doing brake downs for biceps. Anyway, there was this guy I worked with that was in football and that man was a beast. I watched him move a dumpster over. He would play fight with my martial arts teacher at the time. His strength was like swatting at a squirmy slippery kid, skill versus man handling, was fun to watch. :)

I can't type, move a mouse, hold a game controller... I can't write... I can't drive stick (thank God that snow grounds the VR-4 to the garage!)... I can't, er, you know...
Why doesn't the forum attachment thing work?

I started back at Rock Climbing today. First time in 5 years. Ouch - I forget the bliss you have when you remove your shoes! :lmao
Or the ground crushing your bones in half as you fall to your death... not a very safe sport, but then again, what sports are worth playing that lack some potential complications. ;)

Well, turns out not to be the bur fracture as was suspected. After an incredible amount of X-Rays today (my right arm glows in the dark) it turns out that I broke the scaphoid clean through. Good news, it'll heal quicker; bad news, if I make it slip, I'll need to go in for surgery and a screw or two.
