As discussed in this thread, 3dGameMan: Kickass Forums > Computer Product Review Area > VIDEO REVIEW MEMBER CHAT AREA > Rodney...Maybe a IRC room? (http://3dgameman.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5558), Rodney has no interest in an IRC room for 3dGameman.

The proper article to use is "an", if the word following it begins with a vowel.

I don't see an IRC channel making the forum less active tbh.

It's Rodney's forum not yours, hence his answer. It does make sense though. He would rather you use the forums than some chat rooms.

Did what?
I know rodney said know, but I said I don't think it would cause the forum to get inactive thats all then people start jumping saying its not your forum etc... honestly some people....
I know he said know but I'd have thought IRC would not have made the forum inactive if he did decide to give it a go ahead.
No one allowed to express opinions round here or something? :negative

no, its just that we've discussed/tried some of these things already and have already decided what is best

It's also a good idea to get to understand the nature of the natives before trying to institute change.

I did not say, thats stupid not giving it a try I say we try it now!, I just said I cant see it making a forum inactive, its just not something that happens usually especially when the forum is well established like this forum appears to be.

Well, like I quoted before, moot point Rodney is against it.
Yep, this topic has come up before.
Certainly seems like a great idea, but here are a few reasons off the top of my head why it isn’t:
1. There are a few aholes out there that would just come in for bashing/swearing. Believe me I know because I've tried this idea in the past and had to cancel it very quickly. It’s unfortunately we all can’t get along, but you know how that goes…
2. It takes away from the forum. What I mean by that is, this forum is a resource, instant chat really isn't.
3. There would be no way for me/my mods to personally monitor it (I have too much on my plate as it is) and therefore no way to keep it clean or all ages like my forum is currently. We pride ourselves on keeping this forum on the up and up
There are more reasons but needless to say I currently have no interest in perusing this idea anymore.
PS. If it’s any consolation chatting to me is nothing special, although I can’t speak for Sherry

I know, I did not say it should be tried, I know he said its no good, I just basically wanted to say that I don't think it would cause the forum to get inactive, yea those 3 points he outlined are valid reasons why not to.

Hey dude, you're free to express your opinions. Sorry about Robo, sometimes he's like that. What he SHOULD have done is put up what Efer did.
The reason IRC channels are bad for the forums and would take away users is that say you have an issue or wanna ask about your build.
1. A large 60 person IRC is a crap place to do that
2. You might get a quick answer, but then again, it would be total chaos. You'd basically have a lot of private messaging going on
And so, because of all of that, the community would die out. I mean, there'd be people that would stick to the IRC and forget about the forums. Why post in the forums when you have the IRC? Now see, I ask people I know on the forums questions via AIM or something, but for the most part, I still post on the forums just as much as I did back when I joined which is near to never despite the amount of posts I've made. The forum community is like a family community. People have very strong feelings toward it and call it a place like home where they know people and everyone kinda knows each other, but there's nothing too crazy going on like you'd have in an IRC chat.
It's basically the same dilemma I had with my DDR Club last year. Add Guitar Hero or not. If I did, it'd bring in a lot of people, but then those people wouldn't be DDR players. That'd separate the club into two, and it'd really f' things up. Then again, that'd also alienate the original DDR Club members. You'd have a much larger Guitar Hero audience that's there probably not willing to play DDR unless there wasn't any Guitar Hero, and a bunch of DDR players, but not as many, who just wanna play DDR. Might wanna play Guitar Hero, but they're in the DDR Club to play DDR. Then there's the issue of song length because Guitar Hero songs are about 3-4 times the length of DDR ones. It's just a whole big mess. The move was to eventually have one day with Guitar Hero and DDR to get people involved and show them how cool DDR is as well and how it's more of a social thing, and then go from there w/ just DDR.
In this case, does that make sense why having an IRC channel is bad? You'd even have non-forumers in there, or if they had a password system, it'll still be hard to manage. You can always PM people or IM them if they've included their IM names on the forums, but even that might get people away from using the forums like they should be used. It's the fact that the community here is so good that keep people coming back and sticking to it. IRC does not do that.
And to clarify, my original post in this was because I realized that just about everything (even people) had IRC channels so I was just curious if 3GM had or ever had one. Apparently it did have one for a few days or something, but now it's gone. And I can understand Rod's sentiment about not liking chat over the forums. See here's something, the forums have info you can constantly look up and look back to. It's organized and clean. IRC doesn't have that. And there's no way Rod's gonna wanna host a 4GB log file of the last 6 years of IRC chatting, lol!
And dang people! In my thread, don't go all crazy talkin' people down! Tivon monitors the forums, but I have control over my own thread, or at least, I think it should mean something if I started the thread.

He may allow us to post, but he can remove us just as fast. He doesn't because he's a nice guy but don't think he can't...or won't. You don't own the thread or any part of it.

have you ever tried to talk in chris pirillo irc? so many people talks so much that you might miss something... plus everytime you say the words " mac vs pcs" you'll get a bunch of people spamming which is better and the debate will never end.
chris pirillo's irc also have topic your suppose to talk about but is usually ignored
also its better to find help on a forum with computer needs than on irc
personally im not really familiar with irc so it doesnt help me there
