View Full Version : help me decide (if you can)

i cant decide which to buy. they both fill a niche, but i dont know which niche to go towards.

the first one i wanted was a Hawk sport, which is a near pre built kit for $165. i would be able to use my existing hardware, but it is mostly a beginner helicopter (wood blades, plastic body, mechanical pitch adjustment)

the other one i thought of was the Raven CCPM. this thing is a new method of copter control, with no mechanics in the rotor head. the only thing that controls it are three servos, which (thanks to computer programming cards) work together to adjust everything. Cyclic Collective Pitch Mixing is what CCPM stands for. sadly, this is a bit more expensive, parts are made of aluminum rather than plastic, and the blades are 550mm hurricane carbon. ($80 a set) so it will cost me $300 just for the helicopter. not only will i need the heli, but i will need a CCPM capable radio, which will be another $250-300.

here are some beauty shots to help you help me decide. :)

the Hawk Sport ($165)

the raven costs a *lot* more, but it can also do a lot more, faster and better. however, the hawk sport is dirt cheap. which should i get?

damn it, lol.

ok, the hawk sport- as you can see, it is made of more "affordable" pieces like plastic, wood blades, and a lot of servo gears to control the cyclics (takes more effort to set up)

contender:

The raven CCPM 30 - uses three servos in Cyclic Collective Pitch mixing, computer controlled. much simpler to set up, however it requires a 6 channel CCPM radio and it is much more expensive for the kit. it uses aluminum side frames, carbon fiber blades, and an all metal swashplate.

:D

if i was gonna buy the best i would have a JR Vigor 90 ($1000 retail, for fuselage only)

i just like century's helicopters. only thing that is really holding me back from getting a raven is this. the Futaba 6XAS radio costs $230.

i would probably get it in december and make it yet another winter project.... but i would like to get a new engine (another $140) so this could cost me some.... lol.

Do you plan on keeping the helis you have now, or would you be willing to sell some of it to pick up the tab for the newer Raven and the new R/C ?

Or, how about ebay? Would they have heli stuff for cheaper?

well, since i just dont feel comfortable with it i am selling my hawk 3 on ebay, along with my TT engine, 4 channel AIRPLANE radio (people always gave me funny looks when i told them i had an airplane radio for my heli) and misc stuff.

with that i should make about $250-300, and that will go towards the raven (which i decided on.)

i will just scrape up some more cash for the $150 engine and the 6 channel heli radio. shouldnt be too hard.

the real fun part is painting it, will the 3gm colors and logo be the same when you update the site? i plan on putting a 3gm decal on it :D

thats it... hey! if i buy now i get a free crash kit. (rotor blades, main shaft, subrotor shaft, feathering spindle, tail boom, $60 value :D :D)

My logo will POSSIBLY stay the same (not 100% on that though) but the site colors will be very different. Site should be completely finished mid Sept.
