I borrowed a copy of the book, The Lord of The Rings from a friend at work.

It has all three parts in it...Fellowship of The Ring, the Two Towers, and The Return of The King.

Must say that there are parts in the book I enjoy a lot, and wished they could have added to the movie. But I won't mention any here...don't want to spoil it for anyone ;).

Hobbits seem like much more selfish creatures in the book, the movie sugar coated them a bit, but I guess you can't fit it all in. Did anyone else get this impression?

I can't wait to finish it and read The Hobbit too. I know it's back-a$$wards but there's not turning back now :). I've got a few comments on the subway already about how the book is "big, heavy reading" or, "that book's almost as big as you are, lol"..

Yeah, short jokes...I could pass for a Hobbit by size...minus the furry large feet :D.

Yeah, they're coming out with a "Special edition" of the movie that will have those parts added into it, so if you want to see the bigger picture you're gonna have to buy or rent that version of the movie to see all that's not included in the normal edition(Obviously for playtimes and whatnot)

yes... the special edition is out now, it is $70 or so and it comes with the two king statues as DVD stands :D if it adds another half hour of cut footage, that makes the movie like... 4 hours! :Holy Crap

Hmm...yeah, I still feel cheated when I bought the regular version, I never knew they'd make a special edition before I bought the regular one.

Just as a point of interest Sherry, I recently spent some time working at Marquette University in Milwaukee, where the original manuscripts of Tolkien's work reside. It was something of an honor to be on the same campus as the resting place of such noted documents.

Scottman, do they have the manuscripts on display?

What wonderful dreams and thoughts he must have had to pen such a detailed world. His own personal creation. So complete.

Do the new scenes deal with Tom Bombadil, or is that still left out?
I always thought that was one of the more interesting parts of the book.

From the link in my original post: "Please note: In preparation of the Department of Special Collections move to the new John P. Raynor, S.J., Library, our exhibit of manuscripts from The Lord of the Rings will be closed in early 2003. A new exhibit will be prepared for the Raynor Library, scheduled to open in September 2003."

I guess that means "yes", but it will be unavailable for a while.

Hmm. I wonder if they allow pictures? It might be nice to stop by to visit the display before it closes and get a few snaps. Would anybody be interested in seeing some pics of the original manuscripts if I could get them?

Don't make a special trip there just for us, but if you just happen to be passing by, I would be interested :).

I'm just passing that part on the book now, and you are right! What an amazing few scenes that part would have been :).

Now I see where they really had to cut down and shorten it...otherwise we would all be geting deep leg vein thrombosis from sitting in the movie chairs for hours on end...

BRING IT ON! :KICKASS :devil

I would sit through 4 hours of LOTR, don't know how profitable it is to show a 4 hour movie in a movie theatre though.... ;)

question.... with the extended 4 disc set, i notice that the first 2 discs are for the movie itself... do you have to change discs to watch the entire movie with the added footage, or is it like 2 audio commentary versions on one disc and 2 on another? my friend and i have been trying to figure this out since he reserved it a while ago... i'm waiting to see whether i want to get it or not, since i already have the standard *gag... fullscreen... gag* version on DVD

LoL! If it went four hours long, we would need an intermission at the half way point for food and washroom breaks :).

But yes, it would be great! Just like sitting thru the Star Wars Trilogy or the Hellraisers.

THERE IS A LOTR THREAD AND I JUST FOUND IT?!?

Oh, well.

How about this? When The Return of the King is released, they are going to be reshowing the extended editions of the first two. They are even going to have some marathons! Think about it...10 hours of LOTR!

Man, I would do that in a second...well more like 10 hours, but you know. :Yea right

:Holy Crap
:D

I made virtual disks of my Extended Edition DVDs, just the first two. Takes up a good 16 gigs, but I've got the space, so it's worth it! :D

Now, when I'm lazy, I don't have to load the DVD into the drive manually!

That would actually be pretty cool. We missed the Two Towers when it was in theaters, so it would be a good way for us to get to see it - especially if it's a marathon type thing. That would be cool.

Ouch... That would hurt after a while... I don't know many people that could go that long without some kind of break... Even if it's just to stretch...

Did you ever finish them all? If so, you should give the Silmarillian a shot. That's extreamly good too. Pretty difficult to read though, at least the first time. ;-)

I thought that they portrayed Hobbits quite well in the movies. However, they seemed to have portrayed Faramir wrong in TTT. In the book, he was like the unselfish side of his brother, Boramir. He never tried to make Frodo hand over the ring to Gondor. He knew that Boramir had tried to take the ring from Frodo even before Sam told him this. Faramir was much cooler in the book. His head wasn't bloated with power like Boramir's was from being the favored son of the Steward of Gondor. :Sigh

Oh, well.

The Return of the King is going to be the best movie ever - by far. I can't even say in words how much I loved the book. :heartbeat

The Silmarillion is my favourite jointly with Unfinished Tales. They are the Mythology of Middle Earth.

Evidently the reason Faramir looks bad in TT is that his good scenes are cut so that he looks harsher than was intended - they are restored in the Special Edition.
