Thing

I found this THING on eBay.
I bought it because it looked like a good candidate for mods.

  • I wanted to do more of my own mods and buy less bolt-on junk.
This has lots of room for radiators, pumps and fans.
I've spent extra time planning this case, since I can cut only once.
I got a really big, but low cost radiator on eBay.
I got lots of Plexi-Glas and Weld-on#3 for Windows, a switch-bay mod, and the radiator shroud.
More Stuff on this case

Everything I got to go in here is big.
I just had to add one more fan.
Since it has casters (whick addeds to the height) I decided on adding an extra blow hole on the bottom.

The bottoom willl get a thin one. I just grabbed a fan to check the hole. That monster is one of 4 that go on the radiator.
120mm x 38mm Fan and these for the bottom of the raidator. 120mm x 25mm Fan

I have an enermax laying around somewhere for this bottom hole.

Here is my
Shopping List.

More of thing
I keep getting hits on my site of folks wanting afan template.

Well here it is.

It's a 120mm Fan grill and a square to keep it sqaure with the case. I use an automatic center punch to get the holes right too.

Flairing the intake
I'm working now on flairing the intake to make it a little more 3-D.
I just want some style to the case. I wish that hole was lower, but that is what I have to work with. I'm using glazing putty in thin layers.

It gets a 120mm Fan Duct. The real Fan is Off-Set. The previous owner may have cut the hole in the front and just had a grill attached. I have this duct from frozencpu. LINK

I have some mesh to go on the inside of the case, along with some LED's that run in sequence. Right now the hole is just a little bit too big, and needs some style, so out comes the bondo.

The glazing is not working well. It's meant for tiny touch up jobs, I so got some regular bondo. I knoew better, but did it anyway.

The Case will be black, more or less. I found some paint that shines in 3 different colors. It's base color is black.
I already have 4 windows cut into the case. Top window for the radiator, 2 side windows, and another very small window on the motherboard side. It will have 4-120MM fans for the radiator, 1 extra 120MM on the top-rear top, 1-120mm "suck-hole" fan on the bottom, 1-120MM fan for the intake. Thats 7, 120MM fans. Add two morefans on the power supply, two on a kick ass ASUS Video Card and 2-80MM case fans. Finally a homemade card cooler for top slot, above the video card.
I spent today polishing the cuts from jig-saw, and working on the front intake. Everything takes more time then what you would think. My big project coming after the case, will be the water tank. Then I'll make a clear switch-bay with cathode switches. I think I have everything I need except a 10" bench-top table saw.

. . . .

If I look hard, I might find a spot for a few more fans.

One more hole to whack.

I had some of these outdated port connector holes fall out when my jig-saw took me for a ride.

I was inspired by Project Veil's post , who had used screen instead of plastic windows.
I had some "modders-mesh" on hand so I took the dremel cure-all. I'll run the mesh under everything, including the fans.

I bought a $107 10" table saw today to help me with the case windows. I just wanted to make the work easy to handle.

I have some graduation receptions to go to today, but I did get some work done. I got all the windows cut and most of the radiator shroud done. I have decided not to use any window trim.
I'll simply attach the windows with small brass wood screws or perhaps small brass machine screws.

The Acrylic has been cut, over-size all the way around it's perimeter.

The top case window is actually two pieces thick.
The lower is the mounting flange to attach it to the case, while the smaller one will project some from the case. It will be finely polished to conduct light.

Then one more flange to be constructed for it's bottom.

1/8" on the case windows. and 3/16" on all the top pieces.
I bought most all of acrylic on eBay. It's about the only place to get smaller size pieces.
I'm making another piece like the top-inside part, to attach the bottom fans to. My radiator had no shroud, so I've had to get creative on how to mount it. The radiator extends partway into the CD Bays. I'll bore the assembly with this.

I'll make a bay-front with a temperture probe to cover the front of this.

I'm making my switch bays out of some the 3/16" stock, and cathode tipped switches.

Acrylic is fairly easy to work with, after I found the right glue (weld-on#3). Woodworking tools do the rest. I just got this table saw at true-value for $107.

More of the "Master Plan".
I should have enough time to paint the case this weekend.
Next is the switch-bay and water tank.
I've built other switch bays, but all used existing bay covers.
This time I want to build the entire bay.
I have enough thick Acrylic left over to build a bay and the other covers. Just in case, I picked up some extra plastic on eBay.

I have 10 bays to do something with.
