Software giant Microsoft is pondering what the hell went wrong when a stability upgrade it released last week for Windows 7 made its flagship OS less stable.
According to a thread on Microsoft TechNet, the update (KB977074) causes screen freezes and hangs the boot screen. At shutdown the PC often hangs with a message that a program is still running but if you force the program end it does not work. In the end all you can do is swear and hit the power button.
Some people are complaining that they got a message indicating they needed to validate Windows 7.

China announced a major bust of computer hackers, with state media saying officials had shut what they called the country's largest distributor of tools used in malicious Internet attacks.

An Adobe product manager has apologized for allowing a potentially serious bug in Flash Player to remain unfixed for more than 16 months.
The admission, by Emmy Huang, product manager for Flash, came a week after Apple CEO Steve Jobs lambasted Adobe engineers as "lazy" and said when Macs crash, "more often than not it’s because of Flash." Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch struck back, insisting that at Adobe, "we don't ship Flash with any known crash bugs."
The crash bug at issue in Huang's blog post published over the weekend was reported in September 2008, but it has yet to be excised from release
Last week I wrote about reports that some Windows 7 users are experiencing anomalies with battery life, or at least how Windows 7 reports remaining battery life. The issue seemed worthy of exploring, but not big enough to cause any significant damage to Microsoft's flagship desktop operating system.
The official statement from Microsoft last week was:
"Microsoft has been made aware that some computers running Windows 7 receive a warning that the battery needs to be replaced when the battery is new or in good health.
"In the wake of the Intel Clarkdale series of processors (Core i3 500 & Core i5 600 series) we have seen a lot of H55 chipset based motherboards out there. H55 is a chipset for your average mainstream entry level motherboards series, there is in fact a small step up .. it's based on the H57 chipset and will bring some more features to the table. Gigabyte was one of the first out there to ship out one of their H57 based motherboards. The Gigabyte H57 series offers a little more in the form of RAID support while it also packs a little more punch which we'll look at in this review of course.
