Ask Ars: are "green" hard drives really all that green?

"Question: How much of a difference do "green" drives actually make in a system build? Do you save enough power for it to be worthwhile, or is it just a marketing gimmick? When a drive is "green," the designation usually just means that it runs on the slower side—5400 rotations per minute, as opposed to the more ubiquitous 7200 RPM. But in some cases, this slowdown can translate to drives that are quieter, cooler, and less power-hungry. We're not talking the same power savings as, say, switching to fluorescent light-bulbs from full-spectrum ones. But there are a few watts to be saved here, which makes green drives a decent choice for a platform that will see a lot of use, but doesn't necessarily need to be high-performance. (If you're really looking for power savings above all else, though, the absolute best option is a solid-state drive.)"

Yeah, I would rather use more watts and have the speed. I think its just a marketing thing to see their less than desirable drives sell. There could be more to it though, maybe they get Browne points with the States or Government for promoting cost effective energy saving options. If the difference is 46Watts saved and businesses that have hundreds of thousands of computers, then the numbers can add up to something worth-wild like people keeping their jobs. With the prices of Electricity in our home going up each year it could help a little, but it's just a drop in the bucket overall.

How can people be so naive? First of all, the "green" drive will save you 5W/h at MAX. but it will be slow and painful to use. What kind of saving is 5W for the cost of speed? I'd much rather have a 50W HDD but ultra fast, than 4W HDD slow as...whatever. And second of all, why everyone cares about power savings? I pay for my electricity, when somebody else pays for it, then they can tell me that I need to save power and what not. I love this planet also, but my 4W won't make a difference in the world. There are luxury cruises and all those ships do more damage to this planet in one month than I with my PC can do in 900 lifetimes. There are trucks, cars, factories...everything is polluting this planet, and now my 4W are the problem? Yeah, right.
