Ill probably never update by Mobo again, i use one thats old as nothing else will keep my OC stable...

You should know the risks about updating your bios before actually doing it!

Anonymous

i only update if i have to :D

If only updating bios is easier....

Do you get paid for people updating their BIOS, or why on earth are the choices for the poll so biased and downright stupid?

The first two are OK, but what on earth is wrong with NOT updating it? If it works, don't fix it is a good way to do things with computers. You're more likely to have problems with the brrrrand spanking new BIOS update than you are with the BIOS that's been working flawlessly ever since you purchased the motherboard.

I hardly ever update mine, but that isn't because I wouldn't remember, it's because the old one works just fine. The middle choice should be "I update when there's a good reason to" and the second to last "I have never updated it".

Sheesh.

Im like you rodney when it comes to upgrading or updating...omg. Sometimes, I actually get myself in trouble too. Sometimes some updates are not so great and I suffer for it

Anonymous

I don't update it. I know I should, but I'm deathly afraid of bricking it. Besides, It's not like updating will do much to a office computer motherboard...

Anonymous

Unless I encounter a problem, I never update it. out of all the PCs I built in the past (and thats in the triple digits), I've only updated a motherboard ONCE and that was so that it can recognize the new CPU that came out.

If its not broken, why fix it?

I reformat,reinstall everything about once a year.
That's when I update the BIOS and other drivers.
So, once a year for me.

I resently updated my bios. I have not gotten in deep with it yet but so far I am regreting it. My nice low voltage overclock is now unstable so I had to up the volts. I am sad.

I don't know what rev my board is... It's a EP45-UD3P.

I update it as soon as it's released :p

Tried once........  like my new operating system? =/

I only update when something is not functioning correctly, memory too slow, x16 slots knocked down to x8, in other words, I'm not a freak at updating ;P. I also turn off auto-updates on all my windows pc's, for example, i really don't feel the need to update internet explorer when i use firefox as my primary browser, all i update is service packs when they get released.

As some psycho hick told me once: If it ant' broke don't fix it.

Anonymous

i dont update bios anymore, ever since my last attempt resulted in a freeze an having to order a new bios chip..

Anonymous

If everything is working correctly then there is no need! You run the risk of harming the BIOS or motherboard! A BIOS is NOT a driver.

... having said this I do update my BIOS regularly lol

Anonymous

I don't know how a BIOS works...

Anonymous

it took me five minutes with my asus motherboard

The thing is with XfX its not "just go to their website" you have to register, not that that is any big deal but then you have to write them a support ticket and then im gonna find out what i do next. Still waiting for reply from them. Easy ? i wish.

It has been done, I did it right away :)

Hello,

1) I only update the bios on the following events 1)when building a new machine and wanting to be running the latest everything, and when there's an issue comes up such as BSOD, Game crashes and so forth.

2) I really like your vidoes, and the way you convey the product essential characteristics coherently to your viewers. you are one of my favorite youtube broadcasters without a doubt. My only wish is that you'd start covering the more advanced products, like NAS's, SAN's , unique network appliances, virtual servers (ESX, Hyper-v) and more.

I hope you do get to read it, just to let you know how much i appreciate your tremendous work, so thank very much.

Mike

I update as often as I need to: only when I'm looking for support on something specific.
I was lately looking out for an update on my MoBo because I wanted to OC more (over voltage) but no luck, so I modded my BIOS to run "out of specs" LOL!

Anonymous

I dont bother updating if everything works fine and stable.

Since I built this PC in December, and everything checks compatible and works great, I haven't updated it. I probably will in the future if I need to when I upgrade to a Quad-Core.

True, updating the Motherboard's BIOS is probably a PC enthusiast thing to do. Although it really shouldn't be. I know Asus makes it really easy to update, but most are not. At least not for the average computer user. My video might help some...

I've not had a bad flash since the Pentium 3 days and that was my fault for not reading the motherboard manual to set the a pin on that motherboard causing it to wipe clean. A few tricky times when I had to adjust some memory value and flash back.

I find that often the issues I'm trying to fix are almost never listed in the descriptions of the problems fixed. Makes me ask why they don't tell you more in the BIOS changes, but that's nothing to what Video card drivers do these days.

Updating the Bios is normally something left to the Elite. The average person will not update the Bios because they are scared something bad might happen and will be without a computer for a few more weeks. The only time you see me updating the bios is to fix an issue and normally that always comes back to functionality and overclocking.

Like with my Gigabyte motherboard, I want to overclock the CPU to the max 3.6GHz, but because of some issue with the board the S3 fails and goes into an endless loop. I'm hoping that some day this problem will be fixed in a bios update like they have with many other boards, but here we are months later and still nothing. I am disappointed in Gigabyte and might not buy one of their boards in the future because this problem. Mean while I sit at 3GHz and wait for a bios update.

I only ever update my BIOS when I am having problems with getting something to work. Im a believer of the  'If It ain't broke, don't fix it'.

But at the same time Rodney, you have definately got me thinking, maybe it would be a good idea to start regularly checking and downloading BIOS updates. Its not really that different from updating graphics drivers etc...that remind me, I should really do that!

Cheers! :)

ive never ever updated the bios on any of my systems

never really heard of any big performance gains from updating your bios

i update everything else all the time, drivers, windows but never the bios

It's good to know that someone out there is still using a p5b , I was starting to feel my system was outdated :)

Anonymous

I rarely update the BIOS mobo because i dont want to get it mess up. From what i heard messing up your mobo bios is the worse you can do.

Anonymous

If I can downgrade, then I might update it.

Anonymous

as a rule of thumb i update the bios/firmware every time i buy a new product, just to have the latest release possibly available, after then if system is stable and gives no problem i am not really interested in updating, if it works don't touch it! :D
btw if you'r troubleshooting, probably updating is the way to go, specially if the bios/firmware release notes are somewhere related to your specific problem

Anonymous

Well it isnt adviced when you have no problems so i never updated. I was having a problem with the sound controller of my previous MoBo and after the update it worked just fine ^^

Anonymous

I'm more the "who cares..." guy. I never update my BIOS because I heard that you can ruin much by just updating the BIOS and that you should only update your BIOS if something is not working fine.
I just checked my mainboard with CPU-Z and well... I can't see any BIOS specifications so I don't know if I could update it.

normally, i'm not an Update freak. but recently, i was forced to update the BIOS of my old P5B because of the new E6500K i got. It's just great! everything works great, better performance and easy overclock with unlocked ratio anyway  :D

Anonymous

I've updated it 2 days ago, eheh.

Anonymous

I only update it when I have to. BIOS in particular I don't update that often because of the risk involved if the installation gets interrupted. I try to keep all my drivers up to date though.

Anonymous

i never update it but i dont think its sad, rarely do new bios improve your experience unless you are having difficulty with a bug or you need support for a new cpu and so on

Anonymous

Can you tell us how you are aware of the out-of-date drivers and stuff, do you use a program to notify you when there is a new release :D?

Anonymous

a great tech guru said once, "if it works, why change it ?"

in other words, you should update you firmware or bios IF you have a problem, not because there is a new update out.

is it important to update?!? i bought my XFX 780i on 13th of August 2008. No BIOS pdate since then and i've had no problems what so ever! Thank God for that! lol! :)

Anonymous

When it comes to the bios, I only update it when i have a piece of hardware that needs the bios update for it to work properly. As far as drivers i update them asap. Firmware i never touch.

I only update when i need to, or if there is a significant reason that i need to such as better performance for the board and paripherals or fix of flaws.

Anonymous

My current Abit IC7-G is obsolete and doesn't get any more BIOS updates, however I'm just about to buy an Asus P7P55D-Evo and I've already downloaded the latest BIOS for it and printed the instructions for how to update the BIOS using the Asus EZ Flash 2 from within the BIOS before booting into Windows.

Personally I like to keep BIOS, Drivers and security updates up to date on all my stuff.

Oh my.. still early, but so many people have voted, "Sadly, I've never updated it". I find this a little surprising and depressing. LOL
