I don't play PC games for multiplay. Neither FPS which requires a very fast reaction time (maybe sometimes but if I do, it's only with a game controller and not a keyboard and mouse as I don't like to use them). But what I do play are Final Fantasy games, like Final Fantasy 1 through 10, plus Final Fantasy 12 and Tactics Advance. There are other Eastern RPG/Action RPG games that I used to play, such as Zelda. If I really don't play video games, sometimes I'd like to find a place to look at and listen to music (for instance, Vale in Golden Sun and Apojii Island in Golden Sun 2).

(listen to the waterfall that goes with this song)

(5:00 to 7:50)

All-in-all, video games does not have to be about playing games, it can be just for looking around and relax if you really like the look. For me, it makes me want to live there and not have to be in an almost-flat town, city, or an island (and no, it's not just about living in a mountains, but it's about cities and islands having different layers of platforms that connects between bridges, stairs, and maybe ramps. I actually like to live in a compact city surrounded by waterfall and some parts of the city could be above it. Think of Apojii Islands and Vale combined.

There are some places that I like in Final Fantasy.

  • For Final Fantasy 1 through 5, there's not that much to like, but it is fun to play the games, but I do like the Lands of Summons in Final Fantasy IV.
  • For VI, I like Narshe and South Figaro.
  • For VII, hmm... I don't know of any towns or cities that are nice to look at but there's nothing much I can explore in Midgar, but gee, that city must be so full of polluted air.
  • For VIII, Esther City is my top favorite city that I wish I could live in!!! I could say Balamb Garden, but it's not really a city. But it'd be nice if it could.
  • For IX, that will be Lindblum and Alexandria. However, I have not played the rest of the game, so it's the only two cities that I really liked about.
  • For X, it'll be Luca. Zanarkind is cool in the early parts of the game, but the game won't let me explore the town.
  • I have to skip XI, because it's an online-only game. :(
  • For XII, it's the sky city of Bhujerba and a city of Archades (no, not the Old "crappy" Archades).

I like Larapool in Quest 64. It's just a small town, but it's got a nice waterfall in view.

Aside from video games, I wish I could create my own world and live there, which I could only dream of. And nah... it does not have to have weapons, swords, monsters, and all of that stuff. I really don't know why I think about this, with all the cars in streets, it just makes it kind of boring to live there and it really makes me want to escape the real world but I couldn't. :(

The only time when I used to escape myself from the real world is when I used to go to Epcot at Walt Disney World (specifically the Future World and not the World Showcase). But to go there takes about two hours in a bus (about an hour to get to the Lynx Central Station and about an hour to get to Transportation and Ticket Center). Traveling two hours in the bus is very inefficient, which is why I don't usually bother go there that much unless I go very early. It'd be nice to go out and do some walking between Epcot and Hollywood Studios when I exit at the back of World Showcase.

If there's one city that I like to take a look at, it's Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. It's a university town, but the city is made for pedestrians in mind above the ground while cars travel underground. To me, it's okay, I really don't know why I started to think that I don't like cars, but when I do like cars, I treat cars as a luxury and not a necessity. Sure it can get me around faster, but I prefer walking and bicycling. It'd be nice to walk or bike in the road freely, but not in the US and some countries in Europe and Asia (Japan, to name a few, since I like to speak Japanese once I learn it but English is my native language).

Whew... What a lot of typing and thinking. Well, that's only because I like to express myself a lot when it comes to whether video games are socially important or not. I wouldn't give it a definite "yes" or "no," though, because there are a lot of factors that could impact anyone in their lives. Some games can have negative and/or positive effects in each and everyones' lives.

The social importance of games varies from person to person, if they have trouble making friends IRL or need to relieve stress games can be particularly beneficial.

Games are something you can relate to strangers about and many friends can be made through online gaming.  Particularly those with voice chat where teamwork is rewarded and clans/guilds form.

Of course not everyone else who plays games is interested in making new friends (in some cases people deliberately upset others) and many will never actually meet. However it still creates valuable social opportunities.

As Rodney implied, the people who are addicted to games would likely get addicted to something else anyway. IMO it's better to be addicted to a game than many alternatives (drugs, gambling etc.).

I do not play PC games for multiplay. I really couldn't give a toss about online play. I appreciate technology, development and the thrill of full immersion gaming. From shooters like Crysis to Splinter Cell sneak abouts.
The online world is filled of MILLIONS of 12 year olds that spend HOURS a day honing their skills, instead of cleaning their rooms or taking out the trash!! I would not stand a chance against these social lepers.
I game mainly at night and socialise with friends and family by day. I even go out to the occasional party or have some beers with friends INSTEAD of gaming.
I spend time building, clocking and gaming. But its ot a social environment. According to me.

If It hadn't been for video games there would be no high end computers. Its all a big misinterpretation. What does it mater if i play games with my friend on the pc or something else?

What you said about video games really could be said about nearly all forms of recreation. We could also do very will without film, television, and theater, for example. Whenever there is a thing that gives pleasure, there are also those who can come to be overly-reliant on it. I know someone, for example, who is a television addict. She is constantly watching TV and has a TV equipped with a DVR in every room of the house, including the kitchen.

Looking at video games' role in society begs the larger issue of how recreation benefits us as a whole. While we could easily do without any singular form of recreation, on the whole it is the release of recreational time that keeps us healthy and sane. For this reason I would say that video games are socially important on the same level as television, film, etc.

Maybe, going to huge LAN-party with friends might do good. I've managed to get some new friends that way. :)

Of course, it doesn't always go that way.

EDIT: also had huge fun in a meet with clanmates across the country

You might be wrong, video games might be very important, they might save the world. Check this ted talk about how http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.html :P

to me a good game is like a movie for me but you play it yourself and you can look for what you need and want but i prefer rpg games (single player ) because you don't have to react fast and i don't like guys that are constantly saaing look to mine lvl i'm the best mine reaction "no you are the biggest no-lifer" but i think many people will agree that some games train your brain and some games learns you new things i even expanded mine ability to speak English because i use a lot of english and i also think that there are a lot of gamers on this site especially the gamers that won't to learn more about computers. i would never known what i know now of computers if games didn't exist

i think video games are socially important because it keeps some people for searching for extreme entertainment such as strip clubs, bars, ect. which video games cant impare your driving, and for some it helps them socialize oterwise they would just stay in thier room where at least with video games you are talking to other people, and it does give people a release for things like anger, because no one likes a wife beater!

I'd say games are Anti-Social. Only important for those people without fiends. However it's nice to play once in awhile with your buddies around the World. So maybe it's not important, but it's nice to have social games when you need them.

I find if you can balance your work life, and make sure you are actually independant, the amount of time spent playing video games is entirely upto you.

I can't stand people who are living in their mothers basements, no job, etc, etc. The usual stereotype, but it happens!

Yeah, videogames could cause addiction. Like World of Warcraft, for example, I have to meet up with my guild and and do 25-Man Raid. There's all bunch of quest and boss to work on. So, it does matter about Time-Consuming and Money. I can just turn off the computer and spend some time with my friends, family, etc.

More importantly, we have to focus more on Education like going to school to learn and build your knowledge which is good!
