Hey lads,
Can anyone tell me what's the CHEAPEST soundcard I would need to use these Psykos?
Will the ASUS PCI 5.1 Channel Sound Card XONAR_DG do? The thing is, I had a pretty good soundcard until my brother pulled my headphones (FORGOT he had them on) and destroyed both the headphones AND the soundcard jacks :(
So yeah, would ASUS PCI 5.1 Channel Sound Card XONAR_DG or do I need something better? Just want to be able to use them for MW3, MW2, Black Ops and the Battlefield games :)

Cheers guys,
Abz :D

I have used quite a few different gaming headsets but, the best resource I found to get an impartial view on them can be found at http://www.gamingheadsetreport.com they are constantly adding new headset reviews.

"If you're an audiophile and avid gamer "

What? I tried these at a LAN party, running on a machine spec'd with a top sound card. Atrocious. The sound quality is dismal. Directional? Yes. Quality? Not even close. As stated in another detailed review (I'll not post a link out of proper courtesy):

"The ### ### Wireless Headset, that cost half as much, and that we reviewed here recently, simply blow the Psyko headset out of water in terms of sound quality. And these are wireless!

These sound like I'm listening through sewer pipes.

I'll admit, I'm picky, and use a headphone setup that costs more than most PCs, but even low-end gamer marketed headsets blow these away for sound quality.

The characteristic that gives me headaches may be acceptable to you, just make sure you can try before your shekels are committed.

I just got my Psykos today and hooked them up to my new Auzentech Forte soundcard. They have a very natural sound. In BC2 locating tanks, enemy footsteps, and gunfire was easy. Hearing where zombies were coming from in L4D2 was priceless. I hooked my stereo speakers up to the Forte's headset jack and keep them turned off when using the Psykos. Just two speakers and a subwoofer I use for movies and music so they don't need any of the surround outputs. I doubt I will put the Psyckos on for non FPS games. I hooked up my G27 and took these for a spin in NFS Shift and Grid and found no major benefits from surround sound.

I have no experience with the other surround headsets and I'm no audiophile. But I cannot imagine a better surround experience for FPS gaming. Great job Psyko Guys! Time to test 'em out with MW2...

Anonymous

Update: It turns out that other games do have enough surround effect to wear these a lot. Actually, the Psykos are very comfortable. They fit snug against my ears and won't move even when I shake my head. They don't feel heavy either (I do have a big head though). With the earcups opened you can hear everything around you. You could almost forget you are wearing these. Don't get these if you are trying to be quiet! A lot of sounds escapes to the outside, even through the headband. If you are in the market for great gaming surround sound and don't care about exterior noise or price I highly recommend the Psyko 5.1's. I love 'em.

The blue bird is in flight and awaiting orders. This would be perfect with my blue case code named blue bird special. Does anyone know if this headset overtime has a audibal tappy sound in the background.

300 bucks? Come on I was expecting them to be way more expensive, I've seen pro headphones for that price so I'm not that surprised, yet I'm not saying I'm rich , I cant even build a decent 400-500 bucks rig right now...

Great job on the review Rodney!

I can tell just by the packaging alone that Psyko Audio takes pride in their product.

I really like the the option to open the sides on the ear cups for ventilation and to hear exterior sounds. The color and design looks awesome as well and the technology just simply tops it off.

I would definitely purchase this if my bank account had an extra funds :( But with all that comes in the package I expect it to be in that price range.

I have been waiting for this review for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time... These headphones were designed in my home town Calgary. I own the Tritton AXPRO 5.1 headset and when I tried these on, the Trittons cannot compete... However because of the price, I couldn't return my Trittons  for the Psyko... Thanks for the Review...

There are a few comments and questions here about whether the Psyko 5.1 game experience is dramatically better than other headphones.  Maximum PC just sent us an advance of their upcoming review of the Psyko 5.1.

The good:

  • "Very Unusual.  But does the Psyko's unique tech pay off?  In terms of directional audio, it emphatically does.  Simply put, the Psyko 5.1 headset delivered the best directional audio we've heard in a gaming headset."

The negative:

  • "Sound quality for non-gaming applications is passable, but not great, and because the drivers need to be extra loud for the sound to reach your ears, the set requires an inconvenient external amplifier, and suffers from a lot of noise leakage."

Well, our focus is on giving gamers the technical advantage in directional audio.  We'll put the whole article on our web site.

that headset does make you(anybody) look like an idiot but it's a small price to pay (especially considering the pricetag) for true suround sound, the tech is solid

Those look really dumb. Not for a lan party

I've seen these reviewed and commented on in other youtube video pages. One common theme is the mic boom troubles. I thought sure the designers at Psyko would have come up with a better mount for the mic. Relying on the plug alone as a mount is something a child inventor might try, and improve no doubt.

I understand that the design focus is on the innovative speaker array, but to fall so flat on the microphone part is just lazy. Most of us game online and communication with other gamers is a must.

The mic attachment has been redesigned.  The units build last fall used the mic 2.5mm plug to hold it in place.  That was not adequate and was immediately redesigned.  Now there is a snap that holds it in place.  In fact, it takes a good firm force to insert or remove it.  Rodney shows inserting it in the video at 1:10 and you'll hear the solid snap engagement.

We sell this unit in our store, they dont sell, the tester does not have proper volume levels, we cant get a good loud sound thats worth buying
it runs at 399.99, way tooo much
its very awkward to wear, and the adjustable ear wear out, and cannot keep its size.
after one week of the mic being put in and out it does not stay on.
this headset is not worth it.

do not touch it.

Hello Rodney,

I've been waiting eagerly for this review, but unfortunately after watching it, I'm a little bit disappointed. The way you explain about this headset is just too subjective. You say that it sound great and comfortable but we don't actually know how great it is. My suggestion is that everytime you make a review of headset, at least try to compare them with another similarly-priced headset, or a headset that is really well known by a lot of gamers, like the Astro A40. At least we will get the idea of how great that particular headset is.

Cheers!

can you play sound for example in the left ear without anything coming in the right ear?

Anonymous

No you cannot, the speakers are on your head, there is not much reason to do that anyway, besides listening to old 8-bit MIDI music, but if you do that a lot, stay away from these.

You should stay away anyway, for pure gaming the Razer Megaloden is a great value, or if you do things besides gaming like I do, but still want something good for gaming buy a Grado headset.

The Psykos work just like a room speaker system.  If there is a sound in the front left room speaker the sound hits the left ear 0.35ms before it hits the right ear and is a bit louder in the left ear than the right ear.  Plus the sound flows from in front of both ears.  The Psyko headphone works exactly the same way.  The sound is played in the left front speaker in the headband and the waveguides bring the sound to both ears with the same timing difference, volume difference and flow from the front of both ears.  For rear sounds the Psyko deliver the same way but flows from the rear of the ears.  Just like a room system.

So, the quick answer to your question is that you can't play a sound just in one ear - that never happens in real life.

I personally don't like using headphones because it hurts my ear drum as always. For example, If I play Counter-Strike 1.6 with my Headset for an hour, my ear starts to heat up, and then I have to unplug it and turn on my ostentatious speakers. Speakers still deliver best bass sound compared to headphones.

I agree that other headphones are uncomfortable because of overheating.  That's exactly why we made the Psykos with the ear caps that open up to ventilate the ear cup and keep ears cools.

I have been tracking this headset for the last 2 years and been really excited to see someone review them. I currently own a Medusa 5.1 Gaming Headset that had the price tag of $170. I will say I will never go back to usb headsets, being able to use your sound card properly is much more effective in games especially FPS games. I will definitely look at picking this headset up now that they are finally out, but will wait till they go down some in price, because $300 isn't coming out of my pocket, when Medusa's are fantastic and are cheaper (my mic just broke :( ).

P.S. Unless Psyko wants to send me one to try out :D

Nice review Mr. 3DGameman !!!!!!

If i'm going to buy some headphones worth $300 i'll buy ones that can do more than just directional sounds (note i didn't say games for good reason). A good air of ATs offer great positional soundd and great sound quality.

Anonymous

I have the Logitech G35 with 7.1 suround sound and it works great in games. Is it a massive different or just a little differnet with the Psyko ?

Anonymous

I think this is off topic but i kinda find Rodney funny when he is wearing the headset.. Maybe its because i never seen him like that before.

One more thing, we optimized this Psyko audio system for gaming, not music or movies.  Our focus was to deliver the directional effects of the audio so the gamer can instantly know where every sound comes from.  This helps reduce your reaction time and improve your game play.

That is important for shooter and FPS games.

I agree completely that shooter and FPS games are great for surround sound.  That is what we were focused on.  But we also have customers that love them for WOW arena play, and even some racing sim games so you can hear which tire is letting loose (front left, or rear left).

We have a list of games we enjoy with the Psyko headphones.

http://psykoaudio.blogspot.com/

1) Battlefield Bad Company 2
2) Modern Warfare 2
3) Left 4 Dead 2
4) Alan Wake
5) Dirt 2
6) Gears of War 2
7) Dead Space
8) Assassin's Creed 2
9) Bioshock 1/2
10) Halo series

You can add your favs for surround sound effects on the Psyko facebook page

The concept sounds pretty interesting. The mic sounds also pretty good. However, If I connect the Headphones/Headset into the my soundcard I can't connect my 5.1 speaker setup. An output would be nice so that I can still use my speakers without the need of reconnectiing them.

The demonstration video... well. It is a good explanation but what "gamers" say is always a bit tricky. Even I don't think it's a bad product I won't belive such guys until I've tried the product or have watched some more reviews...

There is a simple way to have both the Psykos and a room system plugged in at the same time - and that is with 3 splitter cables at the sound card.  These can be found at lots of places for a couple of bucks each.

I am sticking with my Sennheiser pc350 those sound good however I have what I need and not wanting to spend more.. (Maybe I can get my sponsors to hook me up with them)

Very nice review Rodney, and seeing you wear them at the end is 'priceless' =P

I'll stick with my Creative Fatal1ty headset because the cheapest I've seen these is about £190 =/

Hello Rodney,

the Psyko 5.1 Headset is a real unique product when comparing to other 5.1 headset.

Personally there are several issues I had with this item and that was the reason I returned it after three days. First thing is that you definetely need a serious soundcard.

And in my opinion it is a little bit heavy and because of that reason it is uncomfortable to wear it for longer gaming sessions.

And on the other side for the price of the psyko I´m able to purchase three roccat  kave headset´s.

Greetings

Wearing your headset looks completely KICKA$$ for me, Rodney! :)

Hey Rod! Did you get a lot of bass from your headset below 40Hz (especially around 30Hz)? I'm a bass freak, so it'd be nice if I could make the bass as loud as it can be without that much distortion between the frequencies of around 20 to 40Hz.
