Green - 16 MB Cache , Lower Consumption, Low noise, Lower performance
Blue - 32 MB Cache , balanced line
Black - 64 MB Cache , High performance line (at expense of consumption and noise)
Differences are small for one house.
I have WD 1 TB Sata3 Caviar Black , and i have no problem with noisiness , it's 3 times less noisy than the cheapest HDDs from like 5 yrs ago.
100 Kickas because it's the top product in the green line , it's just for a different subtype of market , it doesn't mean it's bad if it doesn't have the best speed so i thank 3DGM for having the correct assessment.
A 3TB Caviar Black should also be 100 Kickass if we use the same methodology.

Another nice review but I have to be a little critical about the contrast on the video. When shooting against a white background, the details of the connections on the HDD are just not there. I notice this with many of the reviews losing details because the camera just cannot compensate and adjust for that kind of contrast difference. I also would have liked to learned more about the host bus adapter and OS compatibility.
One final thought.....Can I buy you a manicure? ;)
Yea, it's impossible to get it all perfect in one video, but I try my best. That's one of the reasons I do 3 videos on most products, so if I miss something in one, I hopefully covered it in another.
No manicures for me bud, I don't have the time or patience for that type of thing ;) So you'll have to get used to my man hands, fingers and nails ;) The same goes for makeup, I haven't had to go their yet. Who knows... in the future this might change and I might have to fix myself a little ;)

But I'd have to agree with the poster on the video quality... the white background is just harsh. I think it is just the contrast that makes the details fall out as the still pictures pick it up just fine but still the primary video should show these kinds of details.
Also, no you don't need glasses but the other guy needs a good monitor for sure.

Thanks for the reply. It does say out of stock, but it also says deactivated. I thought that meant it was, as stated, deactivated from the site? It's on CompUSA and TigerDirect, but I just wanted to compare prices.

It's my understanding that the Caviar Green 500GB model has been discontinued as it's not showing on the WD site anymore. They might still be sold in stores until stock in gone, but disconnected.
Pretty sure they stopped production on 500GB versions. We no longer get new ones in at Microcenter, where I work. Only a handful are still around there.
Very good review as always. There jsut some issues:
1:25 Well SATA II or III does not matter (for now) for 'ordinary' HDD which use magnetism to store the data. The max transfere rates of fast drives with 7200rpm are like 150MB/s using the fastest sectors. SATA II (or SATA 3Gbit/s) is up to 3Gbit per second or about 300MByte/s. That's more than enough for now and this HDD considering that the benchmarks are below 150MB/s
Buffer size 16MB+. I think that's OK for a 2.5'' HDD, but a 3,5 HDD can have 32MB+. But that's my opinion.
Average seek time <10ms. Well this HDD is according to the benchmarks about 12 to 15ms average seek time. Rodney, you should mention that HDDs with 5'400rpm will be slower because the seeker head needs more time to get over the sector which should be read/written.
2:56 You don't see that much on the video. You may see that there is something, but you don't have a clear view at the connections. Turn it around and put some (extra) lights on the connections.
With that large drives you should mention the difference between GB and GiB. That 1 Gigabyte has 1'000'000'000 (one Billion) Byte but 1 Gibibyte has 1'073'741'824 Byte. HDD manufactures are using Gigabyte while Windows displays Gibibyte. With a 3 Terabyte HDD Windows displays like 2'700 Gibibyte. 300GB just gone like that because of a different way to look at Bytes is a a bit much since small 2.5'' HDDs are around that size. Just so that the people don't wonder where all the Bytes are gone...
I'm seeing this thing for 270.00 not bad considering the space. It's simply astonishing how quickly these drives have come down in price. I used to check pricing obsessively about how much a terabyte would cost, and back then I was counting it amongst multiple drives (eg. 4x 250gb or 2x 500gb). It was up around 1000.00 for a while. Then it came down. That they have 3TB on a single drive is just amazing! I can't wait to see where the industry goes next.
hello there rodney... did you mention the rpm of this hard drive?... im thinking on buying one 1tb green wd... but some people claim this is a 5400 rpm hard drive...
The speed does not vary and is referred to as IntelliPoeer as it changes per platform based on varies power consumption numbers and algorithms. Each platform can be different so it is not specified.
I believe that all Intellipower drives have been proven to constantly spin at 5,200RPM, not 5,400RPM.
None of these drives alter the spindle motor's speed depending on load.
Impressive access times for a 5,200RPM drive (~15ms).I recently bought a Hitachi 5K3000 2TB drive that spins at 5,940RPM but has a slow seek time of ~19ms!

This is a HDD with 5'400 rpm. All Caviar Green models have 5'400 rpm.
The Caviar Blue and Caviar Black models have 7'200rpm. The Caviar Black HDDs have a bigger buffer though (64MB instead of 32MB). Of course the Caviar Black editions are more expensive.
No, all Caviar Green models spin at 5,200 RPMs and some have a 64MB buffer
EDIT: My bad, Caviar Green drive DON'T spin at 5400RPM, rather at some constant speed between 5500-6000RPM.
As far as WD Laptop drives are concerned, the Scorpio blue 1 and 2 platter drives spin at 5,400RPM. The Scorpio blue 12.5mm thick 3-platter drive spins at 5,200RPM. The Scorpio black drives spin at 7,200RPM.
