The chicken may have come before the egg, sort of

British researchers may have uncovered a partial answer to the age-old question, “what came first the chicken or the egg?”

According to a team, comprising researchers from the University of Warwick and the University of Sheffield, the answer is “chicken” or at least a particular chicken protein.

There is, however, a further twist – this particular chicken protein turns out to come both first and last. That neat trick it performs provides new insights into control of crystal growth which is key to egg shell production.

Computer future depends on the potato

Israeli scientists are convinced that in the future computers will be powered by potatoes. Yissum Research Development, which is the technology transfer arm of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has just introduced what they're calling "solid organic electric battery based upon treated potatoes."

Lab-on-a-chip detects actual food allergies

According to a recent study that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, nearly one in three Americans believes that they have at least one food allergy. In reality, the same study found, less than one in twenty has a food allergy. This disparity is due, in large part, to the difficult nature of determining if one actually has a food allergy.

Happy Meal Toys Banned in Santa Clara

Happy Meal toys and other promotions that come with high-calorie children's meals will soon be banned in parts of Santa Clara County unless the restaurants meet nutritional guidelines approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors.

"This ordinance prevents restaurants from preying on children's' love of toys" to sell high-calorie, unhealthful food, said Supervisor Ken Yeager, who sponsored the measure. "This ordinance breaks the link between unhealthy food and prizes."
