Nvidia fired back at AMD's earlier accusations that it was bribing developers to use its proprietary PhysX technology. Ashutosh Rege, the worldwide director of developer technology at Nvidia, said that the company does provide help to developers who want to implement physics into their games using Nvidia's middleware.
As AMD announced the next step of its Open Physics Initiative today, the company also hit out at Nvidia’s PhysX technology, saying that most game developers only use it for the money.
Speaking to THINQ, AMD’s senior manager of developer relations, Richard Huddy, said: “What I’ve seen with physics, or PhysX rather, is that Nvidia create a marketing deal with a title, and then as part of that marketing deal, they have the right to go in and implement PhysX in the game.”
* Includes the latest PhysX runtime builds to support all released PhysX content including Batman Arkham Asylum and others.
* This release also resolves issues with Arabic language installations and occasional simulation interruption on some machines and titles.
* New runtimes for the PhysX SDK 2.8.3.
* Supports NVIDIA PhysX acceleration on all GeForce 8-series, 9-series, 100-series and 200-series GPUs with a minimum of 256MB dedicated graphics memory and 32 CUDA cores. Note: Some applications may have higher minimum requirements.
There is a rather lively discussion in our forums about NVIDIA’s recent decision to disable PhysX when an ATI card is present in your system. This all started with the release of NVIDIA’s 186+ drivers and, if you follow the link in the forums, you’ll see where the reasoning behind the decision is explained by NVIDIA’s customer care center.
Nvidia supports GPU accelerated Physx on NVIDIA GPUs while using NVIDIA GPUs for graphics. NVIDIA performs extensive Engineering, Development, and QA work that makes Physx a great experience for customers. For a variety of reasons - some development expense some quality assurance and some business reasons NVIDIA will not support GPU accelerated Physx with NVIDIA GPUs while GPU rendering is happening on non- NVIDIA GPUs.
