A new way to recover data off a dead drive, do it yourself at home:
This only works for stuck spindles. If the solenoid is damaged or burned, or the disk is physically scratched, this will not resurrect your drive’s ability to function.
Scratched disk data can sometimes be rebuilt with some specialized software, like testdisk. And I have spent a LOT of time repairing disks by replacing circuit cards and physically opening and rebuilding them for clients who didn’t back up.
The best way to recover data will always be the backup.
