Hi, I have a Samsung Book5 NP540U4E-K01AU which I’ve installed Corsair Vengeance CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 & Samsung 850 EVO Series 1TB SSD. I’m running Kali Linux. I have two guestions.
1) I’m really unhappy with the screen the res is fine but the color, contrast, view angle & reflectiveness are all below what I would like. Can you recommend a screen I can buy to replace it?? Maybe a replacement screen from a Book9 of the same year?? I’m not sure what will fit this chassis.
2) Can you tell me if the CPU in this model is soldered or socketed? I’ve looked around and believe it’s socketed but if it could be confirmed that would be great. I’m thinking of replacing the i5-3337U with either a i7-3687U or i7-3667U to help with compiling images for my Raspberry Pi’s and Radxa Rocks.
I know people are going to say it would be easier just to upgrade to a new laptop but…… I don’t want to, simple.
Help would be greatly appreciated 🙂
Hi sinttx, it has a “matte” 14-inch screen, sounds like you want a “glossy” for better contrast. There is not a whole lot you can do about it hardware wise. Being that this is a notebook, I’m sure the screen is very much preparatory to the device and can’t be changed for something better. However with all that said, you should look into the software settings. There could be options inside windows that will help with the contrast, color, power saving features ect.. Replacing the CPU is not an easy task even for the most of hardcore users. Even if you could change it, does the BIOS support the new CPU? Sounds like you want something better, but don’t want to upgrade to a new laptop, then I guess you already know the answer.
Good Luck!
Working on laptop repair, I have found matte and glossy choices, but usually you will only find one resolution.
Matte screens block reflections, but they DO also limit the viewing angles as a result of the crystal-like covering. As far as color, Samsung tends to be among the best for low-cost, high-accuracy color. Have you used your video driver tuning software to calibrate it?
