I am currently looking at parts for a new build in the future and i would like to know if there is any discernable difference in the SSHD’s currently on the market from both Seagate and Western Digital, links are below, any input is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn’t even bother with the hybrid drives. SSDs are so cheap these days that it’s much more feasible to buy a 128/256 gig SSD for your boot drive and a bunch of other HDDs for mass storage.

Hybrid drives are good for cost cutting, but not nearly as cost effective as they were a year or two ago. However, remember that they are only a speed-booster for the largest block of most frequently used programming (including the OS) as fits within the memory portion of the drive. You will see SSD-like loads of the OS, and the most often used programs, but anything else will be loaded at the drive speed (varied on 3.5″ drives, 5200RPM on 2.5″ drives, on both manufacturers).

They can also be used on server/NAS large capacity clusters to allow a greater burst read speed across a multi-drive volume. But again this won’t be performance of a multi-drive using 1/3 SSD and 2/3 HD (by data space for JBOD, by disk for RAID5/ZFS1/etc.).

For a desktop PC, the fastest solution will remain to be a single SSD for speed-needy issues (loading OS, games, programs) with other data on conventional hard disks. Hybrid may still be the cost effective solution for single-drive laptops, but with NAND flash dropping in price drastically, I’m no longer considering the jump to full SSDs as a deal-breaker.

Thanks for the replies, just for clarification i dont plan on using them for my os, i might get a regular ssd for that, but i am planning to use a number of sshd’s in a raid array for my games only as i would like to have a couple of terabytes of space for all my games and not have to worry about space and to have them load fast at the same time

razear I agree with that statement, further more SSHD’s don’t have sufficient cache on them to make them worth while. I plan on using a 1tb SSD for my new gaming build. It was originally used in a PS4 but the thing was so badly bottlenecked I barely noticed any gains from it. Doesn’t matter, modern SSD’s have built in garbage collection these days and I can do a quick format on it before installing an OS.
