I accept the reasons why Intel and Nvidia charge so much for their stuff nowadays, not all the profit goes to them, some of it goes toward reimbursing consumers for faulty electronics. On top of it they work hard.
People forget just how much effort goes into making our technology that they become irrational about it and start accusing, I know, I have done it and so have my friends. But people aren’t perfect.
Plus there are lots of reasons why electronics go bad, sometimes they get damaged in transit and rarely, a circuit board can fry if ionizing radiation from the sun strikes it. Solar flares can destroy components, the same way sunlight ruins a music CD when exposed.
What I do not condone however is the abuse of workers in factories in Asia, but who else to buy from if we don’t get our parts from there? I found on the plastic thingy which previously covered my CPU socket on my Asus board was labelled Foxconn.
I want everyone to live in a world where the necessities and pleasures in life were available to all, but not at the expense of the human condition.
I say this as a PC gamer and a console gamer.
Life is for living.
You are right: FoxConn is the worst offender. And EVERYTHING is made at FoxConn, including all 3 major gaming consoles, iPhones and almost all other Apple products, PC components of every sort, and more. FoxConn is the builder of choice because they neglect their employees, allowing a “cost reduction” in labor.
A few years ago, they were having issues with employees committing suicide due to long hours, throwing themselves out of windows. Rather than ease work hours, or hire a psychologist for employee needs, they erected nets under the windows to catch the jumpers. So they could go back to work after the jump.
These work conditions remind me of how it was 100-150 years ago here in North America. We turned it around, providing more expensive yet exceptionally high quality products in many areas. With China and their twisted view of capitalism, they will either kill off their workers with the workload and pollution, or they will have a revolution in law as happened elsewhere in the world.
Apple and various other American companies still fund this bullshit though, I don’t know how exploitaton of people in this way can be stopped but it certainly isn’t helping when demand is fueled by both the consumers and partner corporations.
If you’re a vegan/vegetarian like my friend Chandler Klebs on Youtube, you can say the same thing for animal welfare and slaughterhouses too. One of the common myths of vegetarian lifestyles is lack of protein, or that lobsters don’t suffer when boiled alive, they do, even if they sense injuries differently than we do, they know when they are being hurt and they will try to get away.
I remember the story of the lion that got killed with a crossbow, it’s one thing to kill animals for food as other animals do because it is nature, but killing sentient beings for a sport is just sick.
But yes, I read about the suicides at the Foxconn factories a while back and it’s awful.
For sanity reasons I try to ignore the doom and gloom, but you always end up hearing about it on the news.
