Worked fine for me and gets plenty of channels. That being said, I did notice it only went to ‘boot’ when I first turned it on, and then once I connected a good hdtv antenna it did come up to the menu. I’ve purchased an outdoor antenna so I can get the most channels, this has proven the best idea, the only bad being that I had to run a wire outdoors. HDTV seems not to like antennas indoors as the signals seem to be attenuated. The record function, and the remote control are much better than the last 2 other-brand boxes I purchased and returned. This one- for me, is a ‘Keeper’. Use a good antenna, you may pay $60 or more but it’s worth it- use antenna with at least 60 mile reach.

Indoor antennas tend to be rather flat, and you are right that with areas where signal is coming in from multiple angles you can have directional issues. I recommend an antenna like this (below); they are still flat(ish), but don’t have attenuation issues, and can be hidden behind art.
thank u your suggestion
Do you need to do anything tricky to protect your TV from lighting hitting the outdoor antenna? I made one like eire1274 posted with 3 hangers and wood for indoors.
Just an inline surge protector will do the job, like any surge center with coaxial connections.
