Hi, my video cards fan is dying and it keeps over heating because of it, so I guess I need a new one.
I need help/advice on getting a new video card.
I’m looking to spend $200-$250 on an AMD video card that will last me about 2-4 years.
Thanks.

This what you’re after? $229.99 appears to be within your price expectations, it has 4gb of 256bit bus memory and should last you a good while, like the Nvidia 900 series would.

I’d strongly advise not going over 1080p with this video card however, as certain games can take up quite a bit of video memory, GTA 5 and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare in particular.
If you plan on 4k gaming, you’re either going to have to invest in an Nvidia titan X or wait until technology improves to the point where 4k becomes the norm, there are plenty of other reasons I can think of not doing 4k, like the non existence of 120hz 4k monitors at the moment. 1080p appears to be the sweet spot for now as it is very affordable, 1440p if you can afford it and don’t mind reducing settings for better frame rates.
Really I mostly play Counter Strike GO. And other games on the side. Those other games could be graphically intensive but I just want something that will last a long time and will give me over 250 fps in most cases.
That video card you have in mind should be more than enough for Counter Strike by the looks of things.
And it’s good that you’re thinking ahead and only intend on using one GPU, as there can be optimization problems with xfire/SLI and plus it’s better to just save the money for when the next big leap in video card tech happens IMO, as you can double or even triple performance for a fraction of the power an SLI setup demands, which is both long and short term money savings.
Today the latest 4k/5k gaming will cost you about as much as a diamond ring, in 4-5 years from now you’ll likely be doing it on some mid range or budget video card that costs less than a games console. 🙂 Honestly I can’t wait til that happens, I’ve read that 4k is so awesome that you don’t need AA anymore, which is a bonus I think.
Just a few more questions.
First off my current video card is the AMD Radeon HD 6800.
I never managed to fined review comparisons between the Radeon R9 380 and Radeon R9 280, so I wonder how they fair against each other.
So I’m just wondering how it fairs against those too. Obviously it will be much better than the 6800.
Also, why did you choose MSI over other manufacturers?
What do you think of HIS?
Because from what I hear MSI components are very reliable, try it and see. Also the r9 380 should beat all the other cards you mentioned. Guru3d explains it all. 🙂
Well amad is good choice but I do prefer nvidea.
I’ve done AMD for years and just lately switched to Nvidia, so far I’ve been happy with the switch, something to consider is warranty, AMD cards as far as I can see, all only have a 3 year warranty, I can only suggest sticking to a good brand, Asus would be on the top of my list, followed by Gigabyte and MSI, though in my experience MSI products can run a little hotter then others.
If you went Nvidia, I would suggest EVGA, they have GPUs with 5 year warranties on them.
I would also suggest going on youtube and searching the card your thinking about buying, often you’ll see people putting up that card vs another card at the same price point, you’ll get to see if the one your looking at is the better card at that price.
