So I would like to upgrade my memory, from the two 4GB G-skill 1600 DDR3 Sniper memory sticks, to 16GB 1866 sticks,

Where I need help is well, my motherboard is a little older, here are my specs

CPU: AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera
Mobo: ASRock 990FX Extreme3
Current Memory: G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Looking at the memory I would like to upgrade to, they are all not listed on my motherboard’s supported memory list, a list I feel, probably hasn’t be updated in years, so I kind of feel like I might not have to worry as much when getting memory that isn’t listed but I’m honestly not sure and looking for thoughts from someone a bit more knowledgeable then I

This is my Mobo’s supported memory List

So, that said, suggestions, thoughts?

Should I just upgrade my mobo instead?

ASRock 990FX Extreme3 CPU: FX-8350 Black Edition Ram:(2 x 4GB DDR3 ) GPU : GTX 960 PSU: Corsair 750w

I should note, I’m trying to improve render speeds in programs like Blender, the 3D modeling program.

In truth, pretty much any A+ memory will work. I recommend G.Skill for durability as well as excellent AMD compatibility.

Have fun, be safe! Sláinte!

Thanks for the info, I will be going with a pair of G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)

sense 1. they got a $10 promo code going on right now and 2. I currently have a pair of 4gb G.SKILL Sniper Series memory sticks in my rig now so… And I got those back in 2011

I don’t have enough experience with GSkill memory to have an opinion on it, but I will tell you this, Kingston and Corsair are brilliant with either AMD or Intel. Even as I type the memory in my current PC Kingston hyperX is having no issue with any of my apps on Windows 10. Which I have had for 4+ years since back when I had Windows 7 and reputable memory manufacturers give you lifetime warranty as long as you aren’t running your RAM beyond specification.

My RAM only gave me issue when I punched in an incorrect BIOS setting. The Gigabyte BIOS is a bit confusing, they have standard and turbo which is the default. But I should have watched what I was doing and I didn’t know much about computers back then, still no harm done.

I managed to destroy Kingston memory sticks years ago by accident by dropping them on the carpet.
Again not the manufacturers fault.

I corrected my mistakes and even replaced a no name PSU in my other computer with an Antec 350w, it’s not a high end machine but it does the job for what it was intended for.

I’ve had nothing but good experiences with G-Skill Ropjaws-series memory sticks in any of my systems. Though I am intel-guy, I suspect AMD-based rigs will be just as happy with their AMD-tailored series sticks.
